一般的には「親知らず」と呼ばれる歯は「智歯（ちし）」と呼ばれ、前歯の中央から数えて8番目の歯を指します。下顎の智歯の多くは曲がって生えてきたり、正常に萌出せず埋伏したままの場合もあります。そのためプラークが溜まりやすく、齲触や歯周病による疼痛を発現したり、正常な歯を前に押し出し不正咬合の原因になったりすることがあります。（超音波スケーラー）
