Do you know the Japanese National anthem? Have you ever even heard it?
Well if your like me then your answer will probably be no. So add this to your knowledge of Japanese Culture!

 

 

君が代 Kimi ga yo ? Imperial Reign
(One of the worlds shortest National anthems)
Composed in 1880 by Hiromori Hayashi

The anthem is a Waka Poem from the Heian period, which was later sung to a melody from the Meiji Era

君が代は
千代に
八千代に
細石の
巌となりて
苔の生すまで
Hiragana

きみ が よ は
ちよ に
やちよ に
さざれ いし の
いわお と なりて
こけ の むす まで
         
Furigana

Kimi ga yo wa
Chiyo ni
yachiyo ni
Sazare ishi no
Iwao to narite
Koke no musu made

 

 English Translation

May your reign
Continue for a thousand years.
And last for eight thousand of generations
Until pebbles
Turn into boulders
And covered with Moss
