Hachiko As you arrive at Shibuya station you are in luck as the station is not too complicated, just follow the throng of people. For this guide we will start at the Hachiko Exit. This is where the most active part of Shibuya is found. As you exit the station you will find a statue of Hachiko. The tale of Hachiko is a sad one. In 1924, Hachiko was brought to Tokyo by his owner, Hidesamuroh Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owner's life, Hachiko saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. Even after Ueno's death in May 1925, Hachikō returned every day to the station to wait for him, and did so for the next 10 years.

As you walk a little more you will be faced with Shibuya’s Scramble Koseten (Scramble Crosswalk.) This is the one of the busiest cross walks in all of Tokyo. While waiting for to cross you will see some prominent buildings. One Straight across you will find one with a Starbucks Coffee, with a rental cd shop downstairs. To the right will be the Yamanote Sen overpass if you go under you will be heading for Roppongi. To the left you will see the Shibuya 109 building this is one of the best place to check out Gyaru Styles. There are sometimes gigs in front of the building. We will continue up this way.

shibuya109

As you walk pass Shibuy 109 to the left. You will start walking up a slight hill this is Dogenza Rd. Right after Shibuya 109 on the right, there are some good restaurants as well as the Dubliners Irish Pub, with real pints of Guinnes and Kilkenny. On the left is a really good Thai restaurant. Take the second left up this hill.

shibuyalovehotels

As you turn this corner you will have to walk up a small hill you are now in Love Hotel Land. This area is covered in Love Hotels. Go ahead and walk into a few there is usually a graphic menu on the wall of the rooms available. Good for a few laughs on your own, a lot more fun with someone! At the end of the Love Hotel area are some night clubs including Club Asia, O-West, and Vuenos. As you exit this you will be near the Tokyu Department store and Donkey Hote, This is a cheap store for all sorts of strange party items snacks and more. Now look for Wendy’s Hamburgers and head that way.

shibuyatokyuhands

As you walk past Wendy’s and keep going you should end up in front of Tokyu Hands. This is the ultimate store in Tokyo. It sells everything from pencils to replica Lord of the Rings swords. Head in there and take a look around you can exit from the 1A exit to continue this guide.

When you Exit Tokyu Hands. You can check out the Mont Bell Equipment store across the street if you are into hiking camping. When you are finished, head to the right towards Parco. This is one of the more expensive department stores of Tokyo. When You get to Parco. If you go straight past Parco you will come to a crossing. You can go straight and down a small hill on the left is a T.G.I.F restaurant great if you are in need of some “Normal size portions” of food. If you keep going to the bottom of the hill, and look to the right at the crossing, you will find Tower records across the street. If at the Parco crossing you go left further up the hill you will find NHK, and the Olympic stadium. On the other side of this is Yoyogi park and Harajuku. Let’s back track to when you first hit Parco from Tokyu Hands, you should see a coffee shop on the coner make a right there.

mapleleafshibuya

As you past the Coffee shop you think you are in a deserted loading area for Parco, on left side of you will find a large window on the Parco building looking inside you can see what’s going on in the Tokyo FM radio station. Straight ahead you will see a cinema. This is an old play theater which plays regular and indie movies. Just to the right of this is The Maple Leaf sports bar. This place is great for Canadian style foods and portions. They have great burgers, and fries. To the left is Uniqlo clothing store (I am wearing their sweater right now haha).  Just to the left of the cinema is a small road for people only. There is a stair heading down this road.

shibuyalamborghini

As you descend the stairs you will find all sorts of small shops sporting accessories for women. There is a great cafe, restaurant on the left right at the bottom of the stair. A little further on the right is a Freshness Burger (a Japanese burger joint). If you go a little further you will find a cool surfboard shop on the right. At the end of this road you have a few options. You should be able to see…to the right a Koban (Police Box) just behind it is an all you can eat Pizza joint called “Shakey’s”.  To the left and left again is the Loft another cool department store for all your trendy household needs. If you turn left up the hill to the Loft you see some REALLY expensive bags in the window to the right. Want a $5,000 hand bag? Just past the loft on the right is the Disney store and Humax theaters. If you don’t turn at the loft you will be faced with another Parco on the left. I mention this one because ther is always some really nice cars parked in the street in front. Would you like a purple or an orange Lamborghini Diablo, oh make that a Ferrari F-140. At the end of the stair road we are going to cross the street, and go straight one block.
After you cross the street you will be heading into a busy fast food district. A lot of young people hang out around here. There are some cool shops here though worth mentioning. Just to the right after you cross the street you will see hemp store you can buy all sorts of legal mushrooms and such there. A little further you will be faced with a Mcdonalds restaurant. Just to clear things up I will never eat at that place again they refused to give me two ketchups for my large fries what the hell am I going to do with only enough ketchup for half. To the manager again….grrrrr! Anyway turn left here.

We are near the end of the Shibuya guide now as you head down this street you will be faced with lots of shoe shops. On the left you will find HMV record store. And just before you pop back out into the scramble koseten, there is a GasPanic night club on the left which opens at 5pm with really cheap drinks until 7:30pm.

Well you are now standing at the scramble koseten staring back at the station. Feel free to head back into the jungle which is Shibuya, or go check out some more of Tokyo.

Cheers

Great guide. Seems like there are some fun places to go. I think I could certainly enjoy the Canadian sports bar. Chill out on the chesterfield with a toque and some poutine.... mmm......

Maple Leaf gone!
written by Michael Grist, April 21, 2008
Sadly the Maple Leaf has now been closed. It has been for quite a while actually. Though you can find a Dubliners pub with Irish food, if you make a bit of effort (go up past 109, with 109 on your right, and you'll walk right past it).
